Who Goes There? Friend or Foe?
Symbiosis refers to the interactions between organisms. There are 3 types of symbiosis: parasitism (one organism is helped, the other is harmed), mutualism (both organisms are helped) and commensalism (one organism is helped, the other is unaffected either way)
Note: Predation and parasitism are similar, however, in parasitism one organism is HARMED and in predation one organism is KILLED AND EATEN.

Ecological Relationship Speed Dating Lab Proper:
Materials: per partner pair
Teacher prep- print and cut organism cards before class begins.
Copy of worksheets for each student.
Ecological Relationship Speed Dating Activity Procedure:
- Teacher will tape an Organism Card on each student’s back without showing the students.
- Walk around the room and meet another “organism”. Each student checks the picture on the back of the other student.
- First, give hints to the other student to help them guess what organism they are. Then they will give you hints, and you must guess what organism you are.
- When you both know which organism you are, discuss and decide whether your organisms have a relationship.
- If they do, go sit down with your partner.
- If they don’t, find the organism in the class that DOES have an interaction with your organism.
- When all the partner pairs have been found and are sitting together, discuss as a class what you discovered.
- On your worksheet, choose 6 of the relationships the class found, and document them.
Organism Cards
Teacher will tape one on each student’s back. Keep the secret- don’t let your classmates know what organism they are!
